The dynamic qualities of a high performance car like the 458 Italia are measured by the technicians and engineers that have been developing the Ferrari range using a series of dynamic parameters such as traction, roll, stopping distance, body control, drag and rolling noise. The various dynamic areas are first analyzed separately and then integrated to ensure the best overall outcome.

Researches on the track and in the F1 have produced control systems aimed to improve vehicle control and enhance the drivability. These systems are now so advanced that it is possible for normal drivers to achieve track performance similar to the ones from professional drivers, an achievement unthinkable only few years ago. These systems allowed in fact professional drivers to improve on their own lap times and performance when testing and developing the car. The F430 control systems featured the E-Diff and ESP, the 430 Scuderia introduced the F1-Trac traction control system. With the 458 Italia, Ferrari takes a further step in control systems with the adoption of a solution in which the E-Diff3 and F1-Trac Control software are integrated in the Bosch® ESP ECU. This technique allows to minimize communication times between the two systems, whilst guarantee a vehicle performance improvement. Specifically, this has resulted in the development of the new Power On strategies for the E-Diff3, which have been integrated with the F1-Trac and it is linked to the high performance ABS management strategies.

The E-Diff 3 electronic differentia
l has also been integrated with the gearbox, resulting in an important architecture synergy and overall weight-saving. All the gears of the Ferrari 458 Italia dual clutch F1 gearbox feature triple cone synchronizers which guarantee the sportiness and feeling typical of a sequential gearbox whilst improving efficiency and cutting fuel consumption at the same time. The dual clutch technology is based on the independent management of even and odd gears which are pre-selected using two separate input shafts. The gear shifting time is zero and thus there is no interruption of engine torque to the driven wheels. Response times are faster than those of the gearbox installed in previous Ferrari models. In addition, the specific work done in the final gear ratio and in the first and seventh gear contributed to provide the 458 Italia an even sportier character compared to the past models. The result is a progressive increase in response, more torque distributed to the wheels at lower engine speeds and a powerful seventh gear that takes the car up to its maximum speed.
