Are web site developers the modern version of the unrecognised, poor artist working from a dusty and deprived attic?  There is a case to say that this is indeed true!

However, there is no need to miss out completely on sophisticated tools that will help you to refine the reach and "presence" of your site on the internet.

Free Tools for Web Developers
Page Rank

Keep a constant check on your "Google Page Rank" (PR) with the free Page Rank Checker Tool.  Simply add some HTML code from the Page Rank Checker Home Page to your web page and monitor changes each time you open your web page from the Internet.

Extreme Tracking

Page rank is one of those "after the event" measures of success (or otherwise).  On its own, PR provides no guidance on how to improve the performance of your site.  You cannot go past eXTReMe Tracker for a tool that offers a wealth of information to monitor site performance and health.

eXTReMe Tracker will provide you with data and statistics on a wide range of topics including:
  • number of visitors each day/week/month
  • average number of visitors each week/month
  • the most productive days and times of day
  • search engines referring to your site (including numbers of referrals)
  • web sites referring to your site (including numbers of referrals)
  • search terms used and the frequency of use
  • the number of unique visitors
  • the number of reloads
  • countries of origin
  • IP address and service providers of visitors
  • Operating Systems and Browsers used by visitors
These are but a small sample of the range of benefits of this tool.  By monitoring the data provided you can refine keywords, page text and forums in which you participate in order to increase the "hit rate" for your web site.

I have learned the value of not ignoring the "lesser" search engines.  Ask.com and BearShare both make a small but significant contribution to the visibility of my web sites.

I have also learned to increase the profile of keywords that I had not anticipated as search terms in developing the sites initially.

eXTReMe Tracker has provided me with very specific opportunities to improve performance and can do the same for you.

Site Map Generator

XML Sitemaps provides a free service in which XML, HTML, TXT and ROR.  XML sitemaps can be produced by entering the primary URL of your site.  The major search engines will reference these files in building an index of your site.  Google uses the "sitemap.xml" file for indexing and updating purposes for those with a webmasters account (also free)

Other Tools

Sites such as iwebtool.com provide many more free tools of value to webmasters.  Be sure to check them out and use these resources to build a more successful web site.
